Deeply Mourning Academician Liu Tonghua, May You Rest in Peace

【 Once a talented woman from Wuxi in the Jiangnan region,
Now a renowned academician with frost-tinted temples.
Keeping company with microscopes and magnifying glasses,
Unperturbed by worldly affairs outside the window, wholly devoted to pathology slides.
With great wisdom and courage, she questioned one turbulent wave after another,
Using her sharp eyes to distinguish good from evil, naturally separating them at both ends.
Over 50 years engaged in pathological diagnosis and research,
Her opinions became the gold standard for pathological diagnosis nationwide. 】
This is the award citation for Academician Liu Tonghua when she received the “Outstanding Contribution Award” from Peking Union Medical College Hospital in 2007. Though brief, it vividly outlines her life of diligent dedication to pathological research.

On the morning of July 8, 2018, the master of pathology, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Liu Tonghua from the Pathology Department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, passed away due to ineffective medical treatment, at the age of 89.

Upon hearing the sad news of Academician Liu Tonghua’s passing, the hearts of Maxin people are extremely heavy. With immense gratitude and reluctance, we deeply mourn our beloved Academician Liu Tonghua. Her passing is a significant loss to China’s pathology community.
The departed has ridden the yellow crane away,Yet, Academician Liu Tonghua’s elegant demeanor, kind and wise face remain vividly in the minds of Maxin people.
We still remember the scorching July of 2013, when Academician Liu wrote heartfelt wishes for Maxin’s 20th birthday.

We still remember the pleasant autumn of November that same year, when Academician Liu visited Maxin, with her resonant voice, vigorous steps, and familiar silhouette.

We still remember on the podium, Academician Liu, with her insightful mind and deep affection, expressed hopes for the development of Chinese pathology.

Even if your past voice, appearance, and smile appear vividly before our eyes,
Even if we have ten thousand reasons to disbelieve the fact that you have left,
But you have ultimatelyTaken away the last splendid elegance of the “Three Hua” era in Chinese pathology, along with the gentle rain and fragrant grass,
Leaving only an eternal masterpiece, a wisp of lingering fragrance,
Leaving behind those lines of solid footprints shining with wisdom and dedication.
