The shortage of grassroots pathologists and weak diagnostic capabilities are severe challenges currently faced in China, representing one of the bottlenecks affecting the implementation of tiered healthcare. Statistics show that approximately 50% of China’s secondary-level Grade A hospitals cannot perform intraoperative rapid frozen section diagnoses. Consequently, surgeons are often unable to determine during surgery whether a lesion is a tumor, its benign or malignant nature, whether there is spread to adjacent lymph nodes or organs, or if tumor infiltration is present at the resection margins. This uncertainty prevents them from defining the surgical scope, identifying certain intraoperative surprises, or confirming suspicious microscopic tissues. This leads to overtreatment or undertreatment, resulting in patients undergoing secondary surgeries or seeking medical care elsewhere, severely impacting the medical standards and quality of local hospitals.

“Keeping major illnesses within the county, introducing high-quality medical resources to the grassroots, and establishing a well-equipped diagnosis and treatment system are key,” emphasized Vice President Lin Zhongliang of Yongtai County General Hospital. The pathology department may seem insignificant, but it is actually a marker of a hospital’s capability and level. Without accurate and timely pathological diagnoses, even if senior doctors are consulted, their superb medical skills and rich clinical experience cannot be fully utilized. Often, surgeries are performed, but troubles and accidents follow. Similarly, the inability to provide accurate diagnoses leads to a significant loss of patients with non-tumor, non-malignant minor conditions who could have been treated locally. Therefore, strengthening the construction of pathology departments and enhancing their service capabilities is one of the important measures to break through the bottleneck in implementing tiered healthcare.

Chief Expert Yu Yinghao, Director of the Fujian Pathology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and Chief Expert of Fuzhou Maxin Pathology Diagnosis Center, stated:Maxin Pathology Diagnosis Center is a Cross-Strait Three-Tier Medical Institution Pathology Sharing Platform, with the mission of supporting local pathology discipline construction, talent cultivation, and meeting clinical and patient needs. The county-level pathology diagnosis center collaboratively established with Yongtai County General Hospital will first address the clinical need for intraoperative rapid frozen sections. Subsequently, through the Internet+ healthcare platform, it will gradually introduce routine pathological testing and diagnostic projects from tertiary hospitals. It will fully support the construction and development of the Yongtai County General Hospital medical consortium.

Finally, Fu Xuedong, the head of Maxin Pathology Diagnosis Center, stated that Fuzhou Maxin Pathology Diagnosis Center is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fuzhou Maxin Biotechnology, a leading enterprise in China’s pathology field. In addition to possessing strong brand, technological, channel, and cost advantages, it has maintained extensive and in-depth cooperation with authoritative domestic and international pathology and clinical experts over the past 25 years. It has also established an international remote pathology consultation platform with the Cleveland Clinic. Currently, Maxin Pathology has established county-level pathology diagnosis centers with numerous secondary-level Grade A hospitals both within and outside the province. Beyond meeting routine cytopathology, histopathology, and molecular pathology testing needs, it primarily focuses on providing difficult pathology cases, intraoperative frozen sections, and remote consultation services required clinically. We have the confidence and capability to provide excellent pathological testing and diagnostic services for every hospital, safeguard every doctor and patient, and offer more assistance and support to grassroots hospitals in reducing doctor-patient conflicts and medical disputes.
